More than Just a Workout

I’M 51. MY BODY THINKS IT’S 39, MOSTLY

By Doreen Warfield, Studio Strong

This month in O’Fallon Area Living I wrote about the woman you’ll be at 80.

That article came from a Thursday in May when Dave and I drove to DexaFit Edwardsville and got on their machine table. Not because something was wrong. But rather because I tell people to go know your numbers. And Dave so graciously pointed out that I should do the same.

Hard to argue with that.

Under fifteen minutes of lying still while a machine looks at what’s actually happening inside your body. Muscle. Fat. Bone density. And something called a fitness age — not how old you are, how old your body is actually working.

Mine came back 39.

I am 51.

I sat thinking for a minute. Not going to lie, I may have done a fist pump.

The report card

They give you a letter grade. Like school, except this homework took ten years, didn’t have to be turned in, and nobody gave extra credit for showing up.

Mine came back A+. Dave’s came back A-.

I’m not letting him forget that. Nor the fact that my fitness age is way below what Garmin was reporting and Dave gave me heck over.

We are not finished though. I have work to do on my body fat. Dave has work to do on his visceral fat. We both walked out with a to-do list alongside the good news. That’s the point. You don’t go to find out you’re perfect. You go to find out where you actually stand.

The fitness age tells the real story though.

A 39-year-old body at 51 means the muscle is there. The bone density is there. The things that keep you independent and moving and doing what you love at 70 and 80 — those are there. That’s what made me sit down and write the OAL article. Because seeing those results in black and white made the able woman at 80 feel very real.

The thing I know you’re thinking

She’s a trainer. She’s in the gym all day.

Yes I lift. Three times a week. Same as most of my clients. I am not squeezing in bonus reps between clients. I have a life, a business to run, and a to-do list longer than my arm.

And I started at 242 lbs. The A+ didn’t come from good genetics or unlimited free time. It came from doing the basics consistently for over ten+ years without quitting.

Lifting. Eating enough protein. Sleeping. Drinking water. Repeat.

And guess what? It works!

What this means for you

You can’t build the woman at 80 on purpose if you don’t know where you’re starting. The scale tells you one number and one number only. DexaFit tells you the whole story.

Either way. Go find out where you stand.

The woman at 80 is counting on the decisions you make right now. Might as well make them on purpose.
