THE METHOD BEHIND OUR C25K PROGRAM
Our Couch to 5K app is built on something called the Galloway Method. I want to tell you where it actually came from, because the story matters as much as the method does.

Where it started
Jeff Galloway was a 1972 Olympian. Ran the 10,000 meters in Munich, trained alongside legends like Steve Prefontaine. A few years later he was teaching a beginner running class at his own running store and noticed something. New runners kept getting hurt. Not from running too fast. From running too much, too continuously, before their bodies were ready for it.
So in 1974 he tried something different. Planned walk breaks. Built into the run from the very first mile, not saved for when someone was already exhausted. He wasn’t lowering the bar. He was building a bridge people could actually walk across.
It worked. Decades later, hundreds of thousands of runners, most of them everyday people, not elite athletes, have used his method to finish their first 5K, their first marathon, distances they never thought they’d cross.
Jeff passed away this February at 80 years old. He spent his whole life getting ordinary people to the finish line. Our program stands on what he built, and we wanted you to know that.
Why walk breaks actually work
This isn’t just a nice idea. There’s real research behind it. A study out of the University of Marburg compared marathoners running continuously versus using run-walk intervals. Similar finish times. Significantly less muscle pain and fatigue afterward.
Walk breaks lower the repetitive impact tied to stress fractures, shin splints, and plantar fasciitis. They give your body a chance to reset before fatigue sets in, not after. And here’s the part most people don’t expect: run-walk doesn’t usually cost you time. Runners often finish just as fast, sometimes faster, because they’re not falling apart in the last mile.
How our program uses it
Three runs a week. A guided timer, audio cues tell you exactly when to run and when to walk, so you’re not doing math mid-workout. A progression that builds gradually from short intervals to a full 5K, at your pace, not some generic week-by-week schedule that assumes everyone starts the same place.
Every session was built by our own trainers here in O’Fallon. Not an algorithm. Real people who know what it feels like to start from zero.
Who it’s for
Never run before. Coming back after a break. Tried C25K once and got hurt. Want to actually cross a finish line this year instead of just thinking about it.
Fall race season is coming. This is how you get ready for it without falling apart in week three.
